At Risk: What Not to Wear
I’ll bet that even those who actually did consult their physician before starting an exercise program have hit this wall. I, however, have discovered things about yoga and swimming that may make the road ahead a little clearer for someone who may otherwise feel too overwhelmed to press on.
The hidden side of yoga surprised me the most. Everything I knew about yoga was based on pictures of twig-shaped women in over-priced, eco-friendly, bamboo-weave cropped tights, touching their toes to the backs their heads while balancing on the ball of the other foot, hands folded into prayer position.
If the picture was West Coast-oriented, women named Windswept, Halo or Nevada stood in a nearby rolling green field, next to a clear blue river, drinking Chai tea. Hence the genesis of my resistance and skepticism.
So I never intended for this to happen — an all-consuming affair with yoga. At the time of my first class, I had no idea how much that one encounter would change my life. Yet I couldn’t help myself and learned that everything I thought I knew about yoga was not as it seemed — starting with the fancy clothes.
