A woman-owned barber shop? It's not a mirage
A mirage is something you see that may not necessarily exist. In this case, while walking down Main Street in New Paltz this past summer, I saw what appeared to be three women in Ricci's Barbershop. Thinking this was a mirage, I walked over to see if my eyes were indeed playing tricks on me or if there was a logical explaination.
Upon entering the shop, I met the owner, Cindy Ricci, and as I was getting a haircut she explained to me that the hiring of female barbers has worked well for her; in fact, she has managed to stay in business for the past 15 years.
Scenic photos of Cindy on her bike grace the walls of the barbershop. Cindy is a local, attended the Kingston beauty school and then barber school after high school. According to Cindy, the idea of women working in the barbershop promotes a lot of repeat business of students from around the world and locals including blue- and white-collar clientele.
